Here is what just happened as explained in the March 18-24 edition of Bloomberg Businessweek.

In a much-needed effort to make their food safer, the Chinese government has set up a super-ministry to monitor food and drugs. On March 6th at China’s National People’s Congress, a delegate gave a simple demonstration of  a serious problem. He took out some dark peanuts, prized for their rich flavor, and dropped them in a glass of clear water. Then the water immediately turned black from the chemical dye coating the nuts.

“This is not a show,” he said. “I want people to see how these toxic additives are proliferating and harmful.” This delegate had also “brought more than 300 different samples of doctored food products to Beijing.”
