Today’s news is all about July 4th.
Here are three key terms to help you unlock for your child the meaning of this holiday.
1. Significance
This day in 1776 the Declaration of Independence was adopted by the Continental Congress.
2. Celebrations
Common ways to celebrate are with fireworks, family reunions, concerts, barbecues, picnics, parades and baseball games.
3. Meaning
On this day in 1776 the 13 colonies declared their independence from Great Britain.
Independence
This word has it own special meaning in the world of parenting. We all bring up children from the point in time that they were totally dependent on us to a stage around the age of 18 when they will become totally (or some version of that) independent. Independence is our goal. It is that exact achievement that we all look forward to with great pride.
July! the Month of the Parents
As you celebrate this holiday today, I encourage you to take a little extra time to reflect on where you and your child are together on the road to his or her independence. I wish for you joy as you look back together on your many teaching-learning experiences together.
