Parenting Insight… It is very important to choose your words wisely. Your child will hear the pro-active part of what you say.
Tip 27 – Tell your child “what to do,” and stay away from “what not to do.”
Here are a few examples of guidance that works:
- Walk in the house.
- Put your toys on the shelf.
- Sit up straight.
- Write with the markers.
Here are some examples that have no effect at all:
- Don’t run in the house.
- Don’t leave your toys on the floor.
- Don’t slouch.
- Don’t write with the pens.
“What to do” is the magic!. “What not to do” just does not work.
