Words and their Power!

Parenting Insight… It is very important to choose your words wisely. Your child will hear the pro-active part of what you say.

Tip 27 – Tell your child “what to do,” and stay away from “what not to do.”

"Please put the toys away now. Thank you!"

Here are a few examples of guidance that works:

  • Walk in the house.
  • Put your toys on the shelf.
  • Sit up straight.
  • Write with the markers.
Here are some examples that have no effect at all:
  • Don’t run in the house.
  • Don’t leave your toys on the floor.
  • Don’t slouch.
  • Don’t write with the pens.

“What to do” is the magic!.  “What not to do” just does not work.
