Garbage bag skirt PDF Print E-mail

This week is "Spirit Week" at our local school. My daughter needed to wear something made from a garbage bag today.

Garbage_bag_skirtWhat to make? I'm no seamstress.

I told her that I could create a skirt and she replied, "I don't like black. Those bags are black."

I answered, "I understand that you really like pink. However, no one makes garbage bags in pink. Perhaps you can invent those some day and make us all rich. For now, though, you'll have to settle for BLACK bags."

She sighed a heavy sigh. What a big dilemma for a Preschooler. No pink garbage bags. Maybe Disney needs to pick up on this so they can rake in a little more green.

I'm not a big advocate of all things pink; believe me. I am, however, an advocate of listening to my kids and hearing what THEY like... even if it differs from what I like. So I pondered what could be done... I had just cut some pink tool from her tutu dress the night before, because it was too long and was making her trip.

Ahh-hah!

Here's what we came up with today. Can you tell she's just a TAD happy over it?

I pinned pieces of tool to the garbage bag using small safety pins:

Thanks, Ma:

Creativity is it! There is no end to the kinds of problems it can solve. Now I am wishing there were garbage bags that came in different colors. I think it would add a little kick to an otherwise mundane activity! Here's a silly thought. How about child-size garbage cans with pastel colored garbage bags that fit it!
