One day a mother came in my center. She wanted to consult with me regarding her 3 year old daughter. She said that her daughter could read books, write in English and German and that she was very interested in learning more about everything - especially about planets, space and the gallaxy.

Ah, childhood! Playing outside until sunset. Rock hopping in creeks and splashing in mud puddles. Playing with friends. Saturday cartoons. Not a worry or care to slow us down. Telling silly jokes and pretending to be heroes. Lots and lots of laughter and giggles. But in today’s world, helping children to experience joy is a parental challenge for all of us.

Not everyone likes the term "Gifted." Of course, not everyone likes the term "Special Needs" either. When all is said and done - these words are used to describe children who don't fall into the realm of 'most typical behaviors.' Do some kids learn more quickly than others? Yes. Do some kids pick up concepts more gradually than others? Yes. Are there struggles with each side? Yes.

The wonderful strengths and attributes that a gifted child displays can also lead to difficult social relationships and emotional struggles. It often seems that gifted children are more…emotional, physical, spiritual, etc. requiring more energy from parents.
