Father-Daughter Take a Walk Together Day: July 7, 2010 PDF Print E-mail

Submitted by Shara Lawrence-Weiss and Rick Weiss

From Holidays.net we read:

With the beautiful weather outside now is the perfect time to take a father / daughter walk. Just the two of you. Enjoy the beauty of the summer and the enjoyment of each other. Because before too long you’ll find yourself walking with her one last time; down the aisle.

When children are asked, "What do you want most from your parents?" the answer is typically: "Time."

Both boys and girls needs the attention and time of their parents. That's not always possible when we factor in divorce rates, runaway dads or moms, incarcerated parents and children who have lost a parent(s) in death.

If you are a part of your child's life, however, offering your time and attention are not a luxury to bestow - they are critcal for:

  • Self esteem development
  • A feeling of acceptance
  • A true sense of belonging
  • A secure understanding of their value

When we spend time with our kids, enjoying their company and listening to them, they often open up about their feelings, fears, hopes and dreams. This gives us an irriplaceable opportunity to set the foundation: "You are wanted and needed. You matter."

Taking a walk together is a free and fantastic way to instill these values and core truths.

Consider taking a walk with your daughter today and...may it be one of many more to come.
